Skype is a software telephone (soft-phone). This is a free software if you call from computer to computer. You can call from computer to land line or cell phone but there is a subscription/fee for this service. There are other paid services as well (voice mail, etc).
The best part of this software is if you and the other user(s) have webcams, this can be a FREE video phone! Here are a few ways to use this in the classroom:
read aloud: do you regularly have parents read to your class? Can some parents or grandparents not make it due to work or distance? Skype is a solution!
languages: do you want that authentic, meaningful feel for students in your Spanish class? Why not chat via Skype with a class from Mexico?
presentations: why only have students do presentations to their own class? Have students present to other classrooms around the world!
